Katnić Left Without Medication for Over a Month, Higher Court Remains Silent

Autor: Antena M

Former Chief Special Prosecutor Milivoje Katnić has been without his prescribed medication for more than a month, caught in a standoff with the administration of the Institute for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions (UIKS), which refuses to allow him to take the medication under the supervision of doctors he trusts.

In protest – and at the risk of seriously compromising his health – Katnić has refused treatment from prison doctors and medical staff.

Antena M first reported on the issue exactly two weeks ago, and the story quickly ignited widespread public concern. Despite the public reaction, UIKS has remained steadfast in its decision to strictly adhere to regulations, even going so far as to state that Katnić himself would be to blame should the situation end in tragedy.

While UIKS responded promptly to questions from Antena M, the Higher Court in Podgorica – which received the same set of inquiries on the same day – has yet to issue any response.

By rejecting treatment from prison medical personnel, Katnić is knowingly placing his life at risk. Through a prolonged hunger and thirst strike, the 68-year-old former prosecutor is attempting to send a clear message: he believes he is the target of a politically motivated prosecution. His refusal to take medication stems from a deep mistrust of the system, which he suspects is either trying to break him psychologically or impair his ability to mount a focused defense.

For Katnić, the fight to defend his innocence and preserve his personal and professional integrity outweighs the risk to his life. That is why he insisted on holding as many hearings as possible in June and July, aware that his worsening condition might prevent him from participating in his trial this fall.

Despite mounting public interest, the Higher Court in Podgorica has yet to respond to Antena M’s questions or make any public statement – an enduring silence on a matter of undeniable concern to the Montenegrin public.
