Saša Mujović, the Mayor of Podgorica and a mascot of the religious wing of the Europe Now Movement (PES, referred to as PESbollah), has made quite a name for himself. Often fuming, at times humble, but always rhetorically untalented, Mujović recently stated in an interview that he would love to have coffee with Saint Peter of Cetinje.
This speedo-wearing baptizer in church basins and controversial speaker at Ramadan iftars shared his thoughts on Saint Peter:
“He was a truly unique figure. He ruled Montenegro under difficult conditions, relying on curses and prayers. He lived in a modest monastic cell, not in a palace like most rulers. His greatest strength was his deep understanding of Montenegrins, and I’d love to hear from him how to manage the people – how to understand their will and act… I think I could learn from him how to navigate certain situations, especially in my role as mayor, where you’re constantly under pressure and scrutiny”.
This intellectual reflection from our pious mayor reveals a deep misunderstanding of Petar I Petrović Njegoš, possibly influenced by some robed cleric. In his overly simplistic rhetoric, he fails to mention a single historical fact, just a series of arbitrary value judgments, typical of the clergy.
So, we ask the mayor, if he’s planning to sip coffee with the bishop, would he be interested in addressing the following questions:
- Which church did St. Peter of Cetinje belong to?
- During his time, was church property owned by a foreign state?
- How did the bishop handle traitors to Montenegro and those working against its interests?
And finally, if the bishop started feeling unwell after that coffee, would he ask:
Was there any tradition in Montenegro of diving for the “honorable cross”?
Would St. Peter have dunked himself in a makeshift monastery tub and posted about it on social media?
P.S. Śale, maybe you’d be better off having coffee with a fortune teller – or with MP Vasilije Čarapić.
