The scandalous arrest of Danilo Marunović, a Montenegrin artist and columnist known for his criticism of the "Serbian World" ideology, is a clear signal to all that Vučić’s regime, which has effectively captured the Serbian state, stands as an enemy of a civic and European Montenegro.
In today’s Serbia, only Aleksandar Vučić’s loyalists and sycophants are welcome – those who seek to turn Montenegro into an isolated, economically devastated colonial outpost where they can freely carry out their genocidal policy of eradicating anything that doesn’t fit into the framework of Greater Serbian fascism.
The current attempts to ban public gatherings, shut down the Faculty for Montenegrin Language and Literature (FCJK), and target independent journalists further demonstrate that Belgrade’s autocratic methods are being pushed in Montenegro by Vučić’s local proxies, all to crush the last remaining strongholds of resistance to despotism.
If this continues, the violent arrest of artists and government critics could soon become part of daily life in Montenegro as well.
We call on the Montenegrin authorities, at least those who still feel the need to preserve the appearance, both domestically and internationally, that Montenegro is a sovereign state, to protect Danilo Marunović from the disgraceful actions of the Serbian security services.
