Last night at Villa Gorica, under the direction of Andrija Mandić – and judging by the menu caught on camera – it was a spectacle of greasy indulgence, kitschy folklore, revisionist history, hatred, and fascism. Virtually the entire circle of Greater Serbian nationalists working to undermine Montenegro came together for this festival of vulgarity, celebrating the dismantling of the July 13th Award. One photo – of a minister devouring his meal as if it were his last – says it all.
But what more could we expect from those who, during their rabid anti-NATO protests in 2015, roasted pigs on spits outside Parliament – the same Parliament they now preside over?
Outside Villa Gorica, however, civilization stood its ground. Citizens gathered in peaceful protest against disgrace, nationalism, racism, expansionism, anti-science, and anti-art. For that, they were pepper-sprayed and beaten. Still, they upheld the dignity of July 13th. They exposed the regime’s brutality and the Montenegrin government’s deep fear of its people.
The host had invested too much in anti-Montenegrin propaganda and the desecration of the 13th July Award to allow any disruption at his gathering of like-minded. Last night, the self-styled "voivode" lost his traditional cap. He handed awards to two unworthy recipients – one who denies the existence of the Montenegrin nation, and another who speaks of the Roma people in openly racist terms.
The third honoree – arguably Montenegro’s most acclaimed musician today, the great Miloš Karadaglić – refused the award.
And finally, to those who turned Villa Gorica into a carnival of crudeness: we won’t forgive you for gassing peaceful citizens. We won’t forget your savage attack on Aco Radoman. We won’t back down. We’ll be right behind you, every step of the way. You will be held accountable for your betrayal and for your violence.
We’re watching. We remember.
