As if the misery and chaos caused by our incompetent security sector weren’t enough, we are now forced to witness the usual, though recently far more blatant, bizarre rituals performed by the Serbian Orthodox Church.
You’ll read about the lies and the downfall of the security sector in my upcoming column.
This time, I want to focus on the new memorial service for Uncle Draža held in the city of 46 national heroes, where, believe it or not, the church’s rehabilitation of Chetnik leaders has become the imposed norm.
If you thought the death notices, the memorial in Herceg Novi, Metodije’s award to the supreme commander, the great leader, in Berane, and Vučević’s speech on the Saint Sava path were the peak of the church’s circus, you were mistaken. No parade like this would be complete without the talented Šubara. Ljubiša, aka Metodije, simply continued his “memorials and awards” tour in Berane after a spectacular liturgical outing in Nikšić two days earlier.
And then there was Budo Aleksić, a regular spice in every stew where memorials for Chetnik criminals are organized. Budo once campaigned for a monument to Pavle Đurišić, but bowing to one leader is essentially bowing to the entire horde of evil.
This is not the first memorial for the uncle with bayonets held in the city under Trebjesa. I’ll remind you of the one attended by the then vice-president of the Nikšić municipal assembly, Nemanja Vuković, who later claimed he only accepted a church invitation and wasn’t aware of the event’s purpose. The man came to respect the church; the reason was less important anyway. The habit of the Democrats is to play dead or claim ignorance whenever the public criticizes them.
This time, at least according to media reports, the “centrists” were absent. Vuković’s position no longer requires him to face uncomfortable situations, and the new president of the assembly hasn’t yet realized that attending a celebration of Chetnik ideology isn’t a matter of personal choice but church rules.
Budo and Šubara proudly paid tribute to one of their idols. Budo was probably even more thrilled by the privilege of being a minister, far sweeter than being just some regular party official.
As for Šubara, it’s pointless to argue how shameless it is to call yourself a descendant of Sava and Dragan while working with the church to pave the way for formal Chetnik rehabilitation. In Nikšić, that process officially began with urinating on the monument of a man whose firm convictions and unwavering smile impressed all of Europe. The rest is history, unfortunately, history rewritten to fit the agenda of church clerics and local fascists.
On one hand, the pro-Chetnik campaign was far more aggressive, yet some citizens refused to believe that voting for PES and the Democrats was a vote to continue Kovačević’s reign of terror over the city. On the other hand, had there been more will and better infrastructure among the sovereignists, and a stronger campaign, Nikšić might not have been left at the mercy of those who serve the interests of another country, its homeland, and church, and who submit swift reports on their achievements along Mandić’s winding paths.
But no matter how much you try to destroy Nikšić’s antifascist heritage, no pasaran. Every government is temporary, but honor is eternal. Our ancestors entrusted us with the latter, to never, under any circumstances, sell the freedom won with blood. Because we know that the 46 lost lives are a testament to the pure belief that freedom is the highest ideal. That’s why you will never equate their courage with Chetnik cowardice.
Commander Sava will remain the greatest and the only one we, sworn antifascists, celebrate. Revisionist fairy tales will never turn him into a collaborator or traitor, let alone a secret follower of a criminal movement. You will not dishonor Ljubo’s and Joka’s young lives lost. You will not trample a single Nikšić name while there are those of us who remember every one of them and carry forward the legacy of their fight.
“As long as you hear the shots of our rifles at Ljubo’s grave, the Germans will not pass. And when you don’t hear them anymore, know that there are no living proletarians left at his grave”.
