Constitutional Defenders Who Killed the Constitution

If anyone still had doubts that we’ve been living in a Wonderland much like Alice for the past five years, the latest "popular uprisings" should have erased even the last lingering shred of uncertainty. Listening to the events unfold is terrifying, as Njegoš might have said if, by some miracle, he had found himself at the protest of the Constitutional Defenders. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" Jesus might have cried out, just as he once did to the crowds and his disciples. But neither Njegoš nor Jesus was present at this protest.

Aside from a handful of citizens who attended – with honest intentions, clear consciences, and clean personal histories, regarding the Great Beach – the main revolutionaries and Constitutional Defenders were the same people who, burning with passion to overthrow the DPS dictatorship, "liberated" Montenegro in 2020, unveiling democracy and the rule of law to us, the poor ignorant souls, the miserable slaves.

Suppose I were the type to crack jokes in my columns, like a dear colleague of mine. In that case, I might share a joke – or at least the beginning of one: "Eco-Chetniks, Montenegro’s NGO gravediggers, URA activists, journalists, and columnists from Vijesti and Monitor are now defending Montenegro..." Or maybe that’s not just the beginning – maybe that is the whole joke.

Is the counterrevolution devouring its children? Are the religious (or rather, political) marches known as "litije" now devouring theirs as well? Or, as Danilo Kiš put it, is it "The Sow That Eats Her Own Farrow"? Who, following in Marina Abramović's footsteps, is staging performances in Montenegrin streets – or, more precisely, in the streets of a country called Montenegro (I wouldn’t want the performers to take offense, or, may Saint Sava forgive me, accuse me of being a nationalist simply for calling Montenegro’s streets ‘Montenegrin’)?

Who’s writing the obituary for the Constitution? The very people who trampled it, much like we used to crush ants as kids. (Well, not all of us – some of us held back, because back then, there was an old saying: "If you crush an ant, your mother will die.") Our so-called Constitutional Defenders weren’t worried about any such curses when they mercilessly trampled on the Constitution. Instead, they created a Frankenstein’s monster in their labs – a monster that would eventually engulf Montenegro. It’s like a cheap horror movie cliché, isn’t it? The murderer stands right at the front of the funeral, of course, placing the largest obituary notice.

Well then, dear "Defenders of the Constitution", Since you chose to remain silent like a Buddhist monk when Montenegro's churches were handed over through the so-called Fundamental Agreement, and remained silent throughout everything leading up to it–and everything that followed–your shallow performances now resemble the clumsy essays of a fantasy dragon-slayer. In short, they don't resemble much of anything.

Defending a cypress tree, a beach, or the Sinjajevina mountain while remaining silent about political leaders denying the genocide in Srebrenica, about memorial services for Chetnik war criminals, fascist graffiti in Pljevlja, church leaders preaching hate, the mockery of Montenegrin identity, language, church, and history–silent while joyful songs celebrate Ottoman suffering and call for the “expulsion of gays from the neighborhood”–silent while journalists are publicly targeted and lynched just for not pleasing the regime...
That’s not just hypocrisy, dear "Defenders of the Constitution"–it reeks. Like an ancient can of tuna long past its expiration date.
It stinks to high heaven.

Remaining silent after gunfire erupted from an official Parliament vehicle, staying quiet about the absurd defense of the indefensible, staying mute about the silence of Police Minister Šaranović and the “righteous” Bečić, all while pretending to martyr yourselves for a beach – that’s not just hypocrisy. It reeks like a rotten, open can of tuna. The stench is overwhelming. Forgive me for repeating myself, but no matter how many times I write the truth about you, it will never be enough. It’s sickening to watch and hear Dritan Abazović now complaining, “This isn’t what we fought for”.

Oh yes, it is. This is exactly what you fought for. You gave up your pathetic lives for this – died several times even, only to be resurrected and wake up as the ruling power.

Let me ask you – what’s the difference between you and Milojko Spajić? There is none. You both destroyed the Constitution together.
Now it’s only right that you all sign its obituary together, too. And let Jovan Mićović, your Jovan – the one you violently placed in power with rubber bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas – deliver the funeral rites. You owe him at least that much.
